Leather start-up catches the eye in Uruguay
A Montevideo-based start-up specialising in one-off leather bags, Foglia, recently won the right to exhibit at a design event in the Uruguayan capital thanks to a special programme set up by the country’s first lady.
Lorena Ponce de León, whose husband, Luis Lacalle, became Uruguay’s president in 2020, runs a programme called Sembrando, which aims to help start-ups recover from the effects of the covid-19 pandemic.
Sembrando (which means ‘sowing’) secured a showcase stand at Montevideo’s Feria Máxima design fair, which took place from December 2-4, and Foglia won the right to use it to display its bags and other leathergoods.
Afterwards, Ms Ponce de León visited the fair and said afterwards she had been impressed by the quality of products on display from around 50 start-up companies.
