Minerva bids to increase its presence in Uruguay

Brazilian meat and leather producer Minerva is aiming to take its share of cattle slaughter in Uruguay to around 25% of the country’s total.

The group already has three plants in Uruguay with a combined capacity of 2,500 head of cattle per day. It is now bidding to acquire a company called Breeders and Packers Uruguay from the company’s current owners, a Japanese group, NH Foods.

If successful, Minerva would add the company’s packing plant in Durazno to its footprint in Uruguay and take its capacity there to 3,500 head per day.

Reports in Brazilian media have suggested that Minerva may seek to develop a global partnership with NH Foods, which also has substantial operations in Australia.
