Tongue test for Uruguay in Japan
A Uruguayan delegation, led by President Luis Lacalle, traveled to Japan recently with a view to increasing trade and investment between the two countries.
Uruguay has said specifically that one of the products it hopes to begin exporting to Japan is bovine tongue. It had been sending this product to Russia but the war in Ukraine has forced it to find alternative markets.
Its objective is to use this to build up confidence in its animal health system, which includes vaccinating cattle against foot-and-mouth disease.
If Japan accepts this method of control against the disease, Uruguay has said it will seek to have the Asian country’s free trade agreement partners accept it too.
