Approval for Hermès to train more leathergoods artisans
Luxury leathergoods group Hermès has won approval to add to the qualifications it can offer new recruits at its in-house apprenticeship training school.
Hermès has nine leathergoods hubs across France and currently offers apprenticeship training in five of them, with a sixth, in Riom in the Auvergne, to join the list in November.
In September 2021, the group earned the right to offer formal state qualifications to the people training at these centres, starting with a professional national diploma in leathergoods manufacture. It has said it currently has 450 new leathergoods artisans learning their craft and working their way towards this qualification. The course takes 18 months in total.
Now, in addition, it has secured the right to offer a second qualification, in leather cutting and sewing; industry body the Fédération Française de la Maroquinerie has approved Hermès as an accredited provider of the the necessary skills training for this.
Preparation of candidates for the new qualification will begin in 2023; the leathergoods group said it hoped this would give it a further 200 new apprentices each year.
