African commitment from Prada
Leathergoods brand Prada has partnered with United Nations agency UNFPA, to launch an initiative called ‘Fashion Expressions: The Stories She Wears’. This initiative will use fashion as a platform to empower women in Africa socially and economically.
A pilot project has already launched in Ghana and Kenya with 45 young women as the participants. Established local fashion brands will give six-month industrial attachments to the women. These could pave the way for longer-term employment.
According to Prada, the young women will gain experience in fashion and production as well as traditional textile design. They will also learn about bookkeeping, budgeting and business management.
