Mexico to have leather university course
The Mexican leather industry is celebrating the announcement that, as of 2023, it will be possible to study a degree course in superior tanning technician. The course will be available to students in the science and engineering faculty of the León Campus of the University of Guanajuato (UG).
This project is a result of a collaboration between the university and tanning industry body for Guanajuato, CICUR.
The relationship between the university and CICUR began in 2016 when they came together in a project led by Dr Juan Francisco Rayas Rojas, a researcher at the university and a member of CICUR. Other UG professors later joined the initiative and in 2018 the idea of creating an academic programme arose to help companies improve their tanning processes.
CICUR has said it will award 25 scholarships for the course, which will last two years.
During the first year, students will learn on campus; in the second year, part of the workload will be carried out in tanneries.
