India’s minister for commerce and industry, Piyush Goyal, has said the country has a chance to become the biggest product of footwear and leather garments in the world.

In an address he gave at the Meet At Agra leather and footwear components event on October 7, Mr Goyal said India was currently the second-biggest supplier of both types of product, behind China, but he said that there was potential for it to become “world leader”.

His claim was based on the fact that India’s tannery’s produce an estimated 3 billion square-feet of leather every year.
