Leather colouring expert dies
Ray Tremlett, who died on September 23, aged 83, was an expert in dyeing technology for the leather industry.
After graduating with a BSc from Leeds University, he first worked for the Danish Tanners Research Association. He later joined Ciba Clayton in the UK, a company making dyestuffs, textile auxiliaries, chemicals and leather oils, where he was responsible for product and process development, especially for dye ranges and compatibility studies.
Following the merger of Ciba and Geigy, he became head of customer service and then business manager for the new company, covering the UK and Africa. He also worked for TFL during a long career and was a life member of the UK’s SLTC.
After retiring towards the end of the 1990s, he joined World Leather as an editorial consultant, with a focus on developments in dyeing techniques and chemistry.
His later interests were centred on canal narrow boats in the north of England as an instructor. He also remained an inveterate quiz competitor.
