LCA update from Stahl
Leather chemicals group Stahl has said it now intends to complete lifecycle assessment (LCA) exercises for 150 strategic products in its portfolio by the end of 2022.
In comments earlier this year, the chief executive, Maarten Heijbroek, said he expected the figure to be 100 by the end of this year, following the completion of LCA reports on a first group of 50 products. However, giving an update on progress at the Sustainable Leather Forum in Paris on September 12, the group’s environmental, social and corporate governance director, Mike Costello, said he now expected the total to be 150 at the end of this year and 300 at the end of 2023.
“The data we have is available for customers to see on request,” Mr Costello said, “and we intend to use it to help populate public databases with real, primary data in the next year or two.”
He called on other chemical companies and other companies in the leather sector to make preparations to be able to share their own data in a similar way, but he acknowledged that it was hard work that required substantial investment.
