China beef imports defy trend
Beef exports appear immune to the slowdown in the wider Chinese economy. The country imported a record 270,000 tonnes of beef, primarily from Brazil and Argentina in July.
Seasonally, China imports the year’s highest volumes of beef in the period between August and mid-November, which has made exporters optimistic of ongoing growth.
However, there is still caution among importers in China, where there are ongoing covid-19 restrictions. There are fears, in particular, of major ports being locked down at short notice and of consignments of beef becoming stuck there.
