Peru’s president, Pedro Castillo, has asked the country’s leather and footwear manufacturers to produce 5 million pairs of new children’s shoes for the start of the 2023 school year. Typically, the academic year in Peru runs from March until December.

President Castillo said the government was preparing to issue contracts to manufacturers to enable to start making the shoes in good time and would distribute the footwear to needy families nationwide.

He confirmed that contracts will be awarded to small manufacturing companies in the city of Trujillo, a decision that met with the approval of CITECAL, a leather and footwear industry association based in the northern city.
