Abattoirs obliged to install cameras, Spanish ministry decrees
Spain’s ministry of consumer affairs has announced that the country’s slaughterhouses must install video surveillance systems to support commitments to animal welfare and food safety.
Cameras must cover all the areas in which the animals are kept.
Large abattoirs will have up to one year to implement the surveillance system, while smaller ones will have two years, the ministry has said.
As highlighted by a ministry spokesperson, Spain will be the first country in the European Union to implement an initiative of this kind. “It will mean an improvement in the conditions of animals and in guarantees for consumers,” the spokesperson noted.
