California vehicle proposals fuel complaints
Petrol industry body American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers has called on President Joe Biden to block proposals in California to phase out petrol- and diesel-driven cars more quickly there than in other parts of the US.
California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) has proposed regulations that will ban the sale of new petrol-powered vehicles by 2035. But the proposals set interim quotas, starting with a requirement for 35% of new passenger cars, sports utility vehicles and small trucks to be zero-emission by 2026. This would rise to 51% in 2028, 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035.
American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers chief executive, Chet Thompson, said these measures would “devastating implications for consumers, energy security and the US manufacturing economy” if they came into effect.
