Italian leather recovery halted by new set-backs

24/08/2022

Italy’s national tanning industry body, UNIC, has reported growth in industry output for 2021 compared to the previous year. Output was up by 17.5%. However, levels were still behind those of 2019, by 10% in value and by 5% in volume.

In 2021, there were 1,164 leather manufacturing companies active in Italy. Together, they produced 118 million square-metres of finished leather with a value of €4.2 billion. Collectively, these companies employed almost 18,000 people.

UNIC said there had been signs of a continued recovery at the start of 2022 but that the war in Ukraine and increases in the cost of energy had presented a set-back.
