Recovery of footwear production in Mexico will be slow
It will take Mexico’s footwear sector until 2024 to reach pre-pandemic levels of production, national industry body Canaical has predicted.
Shoe manufacturers in Mexico made 190.5 million pairs in 2021, an increase of around 20% compared to 2020, when covid-19 led to lengthy factory closures, but a long way short of the 250 million pairs Mexico produced in 2019.
In recent comments, Canaical vice-president, Ignacio Irurita, said around 15% of Mexico’s shoe manufacturers had not been able to continue in business. He predicted growth of 10% or 15% year on year for 2022, but said it would be 2024 before the sector can produce the same volume of shoes as it did in 2019.
