Labour shortage in Guanajuato

The footwear industry in the Mexican state of Guanajuato is one of a number of sectors in the region suffering from a shortage of workers.

A state organisation that seeks to foment sustainable development in Guanajuato, SDES, said in recent comments that there are more vacancies than jobseekers in some sectors.

Head of SDES, Ramón Alfaro Gómez, said the footwear industry in Guanajuato may need as many as 3,000 new workers in the next year or so. He said that, in spite of an increase in prosperity in the area, many young people still seek to migrate to the US.

He argued that it was important for employers in Guanajuato to combat this with improvements in the rewards they offer and by presenting the jobs available in a positive light.
