China-Uruguay free trade agreement under discussion

02/08/2022

A delegation from China arrived in Uruguay in late July to meet with government representatives and discuss progress on a possible free trade agreement between the two countries.

Exporters, especially in the agricultural sector, have high expectations of a boost in sales for Uruguayan products in the Chinese markets.

One key point of discussion was the possibility of expanding the proposals to set up an FTA between China and the entire Mercosur trading bloc. Mercosur’s full members are Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, as well as Uruguay. Venezuela’s membership has been suspended since 2016.
