Theft endangers tannery investment

Break-ins at industrial sites in Trelew in southern Argentina may have put in jeopardy a proposal to revive the fortunes of a tannery there.

A leather manufacturing plant in Trelew, run by a company called Sagapiel, has lain empty for some time, but investors from Uruguay had launched a project to restart production there.

Recently, though, thieves broke in, deactivated a transformer and stole the electric cables, presumably to sell the copper.

This has led to speculation that the investors may now abandon the project.

Local media have reported vandalism and theft at another tannery in the area, Muralla Patagónica.
