Positive trade balance for Spain’s leather industry in Q1
Exports from the Spanish leather industry brought in revenues of almost €160 million in the first quarter of 2022. Finished leather contributed more than €100 million to the total, raw hides more than €40 million and semi-finished leather around €19 million.
Over the three-month period, tanners and finished product manufacturers imported hides and leather with a combined value of €110 million, giving a positive balance of trade of €50 million.
This figure was down on the comparative figure for the same period in 2021, which was €53.7 million, but the figure for trade with Italy was up.
Spain exported more than €63 million worth of hides and leather to Italy from January-March 2022 and imported products worth a little over €43 million from tanners and traders in Italy. This gave Spain a trade surplus of almost €20 million with its biggest leather trading partner, up from €14 million in the same quarter last year.
