China lockdowns push US hide export volumes down

Packers, traders and tanners in the US exported a total of 13.3 million hides in the first five months of 2022, a fall of 2.3% compared to the same months last year.

In the January-May period in 2022, there were shipments of 11.6 million wet-salted hides, down by 3% year on year. For wet blue, the 2022 figure was 1.7 million, an increase of 4%.

Total hide export revenues for the first five months of this year reached $570.6 million, an increase of 9.1%.

Wet-salted brought in $389.4 million, up by 9% year on year. The figure for wet blue was $181.25 million, an increase of 8%.

China continued to be the biggest market, by far, for US wet-salted hides with a figure of more than 6.6 million pieces and revenues of $221.9 million, indicating a fall in volume of 12% compared to the first five months of 2021. In the same months in 2022, many regions of China have been affected by covid-19 lockdowns. In terms of value, the 2022 figure was flat.
