New record for US beef exports
Figures for the month of May show new records in volume and value for US beef exports. The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) compiled the figures from data released by the US Department of Agriculture.
In terms of value, US beef exports were above $1 billion for the fourth time this year. The exact figure was $1.09 billion, up by 20% year on year and a new record, beating the previous record in March 2022.
May’s volume was 135,000 tonnes, up by 1% on the previous record, which was set in May 2021.
In the first five months of this year, the total beef export value was $5.14 billion, and the combined volume was 613,266 tonnes, increases of 34% and 4% respectively.
USMEF chief executive, Dan Halstrom, said: “For US beef exports to maintain a $1 billion-per-month pace is tremendous under any circumstances, but it is especially remarkable given the strong US dollar, continued shipping and logistical challenges and the economic uncertainty our industry and international customers face today.”
