PrimeAsia to use polymer-bead technology

06/07/2022

Leather manufacturing group PrimeAsia is to run a pilot project to try out polymer-bead tanning technology from Qualus.

It has set itself a target of reducing its overall water usage by 30% by the end of 2023. It also wants to reduce its energy usage by 15% in the same timeframe. Qualus claims that its Sferes technology can reduce water usage in tanneries by up to 40% and chemical use by 15%.

Trials of the technology will take place at PrimeAsia’s facility at Ba Ria-Vung Tau in Vietnam where it produces more than 6 million square-feet of finished leather per month.
“Innovation is an important driver behind our operations and strategic to continuous improvements,” said chief executive, Jon Clark. “It is exciting to be able to partner with Qualus in this project and we look forward to seeing the preliminary results.”

His counterpart at Qualus, Vikrant Pratap, said: “PrimeAsia is an important player in the global leather industry and we are delighted that it has decided to consider our technology to help it achieve its sustainability goals.”
