New Stahl target means lower-carbon raw materials
Leather chemicals group Stahl has announced that it will reduce carbon emissions in its upstream supply chain by at least 25% in the next ten years, with 2021 as a base year.
It said this target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions was in keeping the most recent guidance provided by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This initiative has been working since 2015 to help companies to set targets that are in line with climate science and with the Paris Agreement goals (to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels by 2050).
Stahl said this was “a key milestone on the company’s journey toward carbon neutrality”.
It explained that the reduction would primarily be achieved by replacing fossil-based raw materials with lower-carbon alternatives.
Chief executive, Maarten Heijbroek (pictured), commented: “This will require continuous technology advances throughout the value chain. We are already working closely with our upstream partners to reach the 10-year milestone, and we will report on our progress each year in our annual environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) report.”
