Spain’s leather exports surpass pre-pandemic levels

Spain’s customs authorities have reported leather export figures for the first quarter of 2022 that were well above the levels achieved prior to the covid-19 pandemic.

Export sales of raw hides grew by 14.6% compared to the first three months of 2021 to reach a total of €40.3 million; semi-finished leather exports rose by 19.5% to reach €18.9 million, and shipments of finished leather soared by 34% to reach €100.4 million.

Italy, China, Portugal and Turkey were the main buyers of raw hides from Spain, accounting for 83% of the total; in the case of semi-finished leather, the principal customers were Italy, France and Portugal, accounting for around 85% of the total, and for finished leather 75% was bought by Italy, France, Portugal and Germany.  

In terms of export earnings for the first three months of 2022 compared to the pre-pandemic first quarter of 2019, the country sold an addition €49.9 million worth of leather according to official data.
