UNIDO goes after ‘silent killer’

27/06/2022

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is preparing to re-release an online training course on how to keep tannery workers safe from hydrogen sulfide.

It originally released its training course on hydrogen sulfide in 2016 and, since then, has trained 5,000 workers from more than 60 countries on how to guard against the dangers of what it has called this “silent killer”.

“Hydrogen sulfide has been called the ‘silent killer’ because it kills victims without warning,” the organisation said. “It is one of the biggest risks in tanneries and effluent treatment plants. All companies with the potential for hydrogen sulfide formation should understand the risks and implement safeguards and training.”

UNIDO has now updated the content with a variety of audio-visual content, including instructional videos from industry leading practitioners, and will re-release the course, jointly with the Sustainable Leather Foundation, on June 28.

Development of the course took place with the support of a financial contribution from the government of Japan.
