Indian tanner adopts Qualus polymer bead technology

10/06/2022

Tanning technology from Qualus is now in use in India. The company’s polymer bead-based system was already in use in tanneries in other countries, including Mexico and Italy, but now Ram Leather has become the first leather manufacturer in India to use the technology.

Qualus has said that placing its polymer beads in tanning drums can help tanners make savings of up to 40% in water usage. As a result, there is also less effluent discharge. The beads are easy to separate from hides for cleaning and reuse.

Ranipet-based Ram Leathers, part of the BKK group, is a leading producer of leather for shoe uppers. It has chosen to use the Qualus technology after completing successfully a series of trials, achieving what it has described as a significant reduction in the volume of water needed in the retanning process.
