Argentina’s Santa Fe province moves to certify deforestation-free hides

06/06/2022

The authorities in the province of Santa Fe in north-eastern Argentina have initiated a process for bringing together meat packers and tanners to establish a traceability certification for hides and meat. The aim is to certify that the products come from animals raised in a deforestation-free environment.

A new traceability system will guarantee that the entire production process, from the birth of the calf to the processing of the meat and hides, have been subject to high standards of environmental care.

The initiative is part of a project proposed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which is carrying out a pilot plan in Argentina. Participants of the project who attended a recent launch meeting in Santa Fe included Marfrig, Cotto Argentina, Swift and Rafaela Foods, and the Sadesa tannery group, amongst others.
