New partnership to heighten leather sustainability standards
Nera Leather Tanning and SPOOR have joined forces to offer improved standards in terms of traceability and sustainability in the leather making process. Nera is a brand of leather chemicals group Royal Smit & Zoon, and SPOOR, a business unit of Danish tanner Scan-Hide.
By combining SOOR’s traceability of hides back to the farm where an animal was raised and Nera’s chrome-free, aldehyde-free and heavy metal-free tanning agent Zeolite, semi-finished leather can be produced for environmentally conscious brands that are aware of growing consumer demands for sustainability and transparency in the materials they purchase.
As emphasised in the Leatherbiz Market Intelligence report published on 31 May, the arguments in favour of using leather instead of synthetic alternatives are stronger than ever. Thus, a credible combination of traceability in terms of animal origin and welfare allied to environmentally friendly tanning processes, can only benefit the image of leather in the mind of the fashion consumer as a responsibly made material that is sustainable and transparent as well as being nonpolluting due to its biodegradability.
The tie-up between Nera and SPOOR will be on view to the public at Première Vision in Paris from July 5-7.
