LHCA announces judging panel for UK competition

Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has announced three new judges for the next UK edition of its Real Leather, Stay Different student design competition.

LHCA says its aim in running the competition is to encourage a new generation of designers “to reconsider their relationship with leather and other natural materials” and to create “stunning designs” in which product longevity and minimal environmental impact are key. Entries can be clothing, footwear or accessories; they must be at least 50% made from leather.

Open to current undergraduate students and recent graduates, LHCA is running the UK edition of this global competition in partnership with ArtsThread and Leather UK. In late May, LHCA announced that Bill Amberg, Suzie Fletcher and Ruth Glen will be the judges for this year’s UK competition.

Designer Bill Amberg (pictured) is a specialist in integrating leather into interior design projects and has also enjoyed success as an accessories designer.

For her part, Suzie Fletcher is a master saddle maker who specialises in the design of saddles for female riders and h ard-to-fit horses.

A specialist in bespoke pieces, Ruth Glen runs a London-based studio and also devotes time to training and mentoring new-generation leather artisans.
