Top-level CLIA visit promotes ‘the future of tanning’
A delegation from China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) including Li Yuzhong (pictured fourth from left), the organisation’s chairman, recently attended a China Leather and Footwear Industry Research Institute (CLFI) meeting to discuss responsible production.

Beyond its headquarters in the Chinese capital, CLFI has branches in provinces up and down the country, including in Sichuan, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Fujian, Hebei, Henan and Shandong, plus around 14 research and development hubs established through partnerships with local enterprises.

Recycling hazardous waste in an environmentally friendly manner was a key topic of conversation, local media reported, including how to reuse chromium-containing leather scraps in dyeing and finishing by incorporating extracted and modified collagen in the retanning process.

Praising CLFI’s work to date in a speech, Mr Li also went on to encourage the Beijing-based body in three particular areas: to play a greater role in the leather industry’s development by sharing more of its technical knowledge, in collaboration with CLIA; to prioritise the usefulness of its scientific research to enterprises, including creating user manuals and hosting businesses on-site to inspire confidence in new ways of working; to promote “zero-waste” methods and otherwise work with industry towards “the future of tanning”.

In addition to his role at CLIA, Mr Li also serves as vice chairman of China National Light Industry Council, which forges links between the Chinese state and commercial light industry entities.
