WWF’s Maurício Bauer takes JBS job

Meat and leather producer JBS has appointed Maurício Bauer as corporate sustainability officer for JBS Brasil. Mr Bauer was previously the Washington DC-based senior director of the beef and leather supply chains for campaign group the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

JBS said that Mr Bauer’s focus in his new role would be to head up the company’s sustainability strategy in the group’s home country, aligned to its global sustainability goals.

Maurício Bauer studied agronomy and veterinary medicine in Brazil before moving to the US. He has been a frequent speaker at leather industry events in recent years and has been instrumental in setting up a number of projects in which WWF and other campaign groups have worked with leather industry bodies to tackle deforestation and its links to leather supply chains.

On announcing one such project with the Leather Working Group at the end of last year, Mr Bauer said it was an “important step towards achieving zero-deforestation supply chains for leather”.
