Africa’s top passenger car producer in 2021 was Morocco

25/04/2022

Official figures from International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) show that automotive factories in Morocco produced 403,007 vehicles last year: 338,339 passenger cars and 64,668 utility vehicles, an increase of 23% compared to 2020.

This puts Morocco clear in second place overall in terms of automotive manufacturing in Africa, but in first place for passenger cars.

Overall, it was behind South Africa, where total production in 2021 was just under 500,000 units. South Africa’s overall figure was up by 12% year on year, but was more evenly divided across vehicle types, with 239,267 passenger cars and 259,820 commercial vehicles.
Egypt and Algeria were third and fourth, but with much smaller outputs.
