Good use of hides helps earn accolades for Tyson plants
Packer and leather group Tyson has announced that six of its plants have achieved gold-level certification from US-based certification body UL for having achieved zero waste to landfill.
Tyson’s plants at Newbern, and Obion County (both Tennessee), Nashville and Hope (both Arkansas), Albany, Kentucky, and Camilla, Georgia, achieved the certification in recognition of their success in reducing the volume of by-products from their meat production and in putting remaining by-products to good use.
Hides are among the by-products that the successful facilities have used well and Tyson made it clear it viewed this as supporting its efforts to achieve high levels of conservation and efficiency. It said its facilities wanted to reduce or eliminate their use of landfills and said this would help save costs.
Between 95% and 99% of waste from the six successful facilities is now being diverted from landfill, Tyson said.
“We’re proud of our team members and the work they are doing to reduce waste to landfills,” said Katherine Pickus, the group’s vice-president for sustainability and global impact. She said the six plants were making a positive difference to the communities in which they operate.
