Local hides give same reassurance as local food
Danish furniture manufacturer Bent Hansen has said it believes the hotel and restaurant sector in the Scandinavian country is ready to link a well-established preference for locally sourced food to a desire for locally sourced furniture.
Creative director and third-generation owner of the furniture company, Henrik Hvid Hansen, has said: “Going to a restaurant is a holistic experience, and we believe that the Danish hotel and restaurant industry is ready to expand the principles of organics and local ingredients from the plate to the furniture.”
To meet this demand, the Aalborg-based company has put together a collection that uses leather made from hides guaranteed to come from cows raised on organic farms in Denmark.
Mr Hansen explained that sourcing upholstery material from traceable hide supplier Spoor was the key to this. Spoor’s laser-technology based system for marking and identifying hides allows finished product manufacturers to pinpoint where the leather in a specific item came from.
He said having leather from Danish hides would give restaurant and hotel owners and their customers a similar level of reassurance regarding animal welfare and care for the environment as local, organic food certification does.
Spoor’s business development director, Birgitte Holgaard Langer, said the hide supplier’s partnership with Bent Hansen was a good example of how traceability and data can be “transformed into a beautiful story that strengthens Danish design classics”.
