Thread & Tonic becomes Butterfly Mark-verified
A family-run, London-based leathergoods brand established last year called Thread & Tonic has been awarded Positive Luxury’s Butterfly Mark for its circular-economy commitments and dedication to non-profits such as education charities in India.

The Butterfly Mark is an independent “trust mark”, designed to highlight the luxury brands, retailers and suppliers that Positive Luxury’s sustainability council have identified as meeting the highest standards of verified environmental, social and governance performance.

Positive Luxury, also based in London, described its mark as “underpinned by the latest international standards, global legislation and best practice principles.”

According to the leathergoods brand, its bags and small leathergoods are made by hand in the world’s “first” leathergoods factory that is 100% powered by renewable solar energy (but does not appear to disclose this factory’s name or location). It uses a bespoke leather recipe that it calls “pure leather”, due to it being manufactured without chemicals viewed as harmful.

Thread & Tonic’s co-founders, brother and sister duo Nakul and Sonal Malhotra, are further committed to becoming fully circular, Positive Luxury said, by optimising resources (and therefore minimising waste) and adhering to principles of biomimicry, cradle to cradle, regenerative design and the blue economy.

Mr Malhotra commented: “Brands that attain the Butterfly Mark are committed to a new definition of luxury, one where the planet is as important as profit. We have set out to create the most environmentally friendly bags and accessories we can, but of course, we’re not perfect.

“We see it as our duty to protect and learn from nature. [Our] every detail from material to technique is thought through with obsessive attention. But it’s essential to quantify the real impact and verify that for our community [with Butterfly Mark accreditation].”
