Goatskin growth for Australia
Industry body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has said slaughter numbers there are increasing as changes to isolation rules are allowing abattoir employees to return to work. It confirmed in mid-January, however, that cattle slaughter at national level was down by 28% and lamb slaughter by 29% compared to the same period in 2021.
At the same time, MLA said there was better news for goat slaughter in Australia, and as a result for the availability of goatskins. It said “numbers are exploding” after 18 months or two years of rebuilding the national goat herd.
National goat slaughter figures in mid-January were 30,000 head per week. This is three times higher than the figure for the US.
