UK leather industry to feature in new book
Work will begin later this year on a history of the leather industry in the UK from the early 1800s until the present day. London-based historian and writer Ian Stone will be the author of the new history and anticipates publishing it in book form in 2024.
He will work with a team of senior figures in the industry in the UK, with Jonathan Muirhead, Ian Michel, Mike Redwood and Paul Pearson providing the editorial guidance.
In addition, industry body Leather UK has asked any individual or company with historical texts, information, photographs, other illustrations or anecdotes to make the material available to Ian Stone for possible inclusion. He can be reached directly at is@ianstone.london.
Initial funding for the project has come from The Leathersellers’ Company, the British Leather Industry Development Trust and private donations. The project has the support of Leather UK, which has said it will welcome further corporate and private donations to help fund the initiative.
Current chairman of Leather UK, James Lang, said: “This important and exciting piece of work will bring together and record the rich history of the UK leather industry and the generations of people and families involved in it. It will demonstrate the quality and innovation of a relevant and sustainable industry, which makes products that stand the test of time.”
