Water pressure for Turkey’s tanners

14/12/2021

Local authorities in important leather-producing parts of Turkey have warned tanners that it will be difficult for water supplies to continue at previous levels.

Many industries will be affected by the measures, which local governments are contemplating owing to the need to concentrate resources on domestic consumption at the expense of industrial users.

Tanning clusters likely to be affected include those at Tuzla-Istanbul, Menemen-Izmir, Bursa, Gerede-Bolu, Corlu-Tekirdag, and Usak.

Industry commentators in Turkey have reacted by saying that tanners there should waste no time in finding ways of urgently reducing the volumes of water they consume in leather-making processes and of improving their reuse and recycling of water, including the use of treated water from effluent treatment plants.
