Footwear, garments and accessories hold Turkish leather exports back
Current trends suggest the Turkish leather industry is likely to achieve export revenues of around $1.6 billion in 2021.
There were expectations that growth would take revenues to an average of $2 billion by 2021. Levels of $1.6 billion would be on a par with those of 2018.
In recent comments, the president of the Turkish Leather Industrialists’ Association, Burak Uyguner, said there had been good growth in the value of exports of semi-processed and finished leather in the first ten months of this year compared to the same period in 2020.
But he said a lack of growth in shipments of footwear, leather garments and accessories had slowed overall progress. He estimated footwear export revenues of around $1 billion at most in 2021 and a figure of, perhaps, $400 million combined for garments and leathergoods. The figure for finished and semi-processed leather is likely to be around $200 million.
