Giant drum is space-saving, Pajusco says

Tanning technology provider Pajusco has said its Obelix drum, which it presents as the biggest wooden tanning drum in the world, can help leather manufacturers make savings in water, chemicals, electricity and also space.

With dimensions of five metres by five metres, the Obelix came onto the market in 2019. The mechanics of the drum and a patented internal system allow improved interaction between hides and chemicals in liming and tanning, Pajusco has argued, leading to better-quality finished leather.

Its size gives it a capacity of almost 30 tonnes of hides. Concentrating this volume in one drum means concentrating water and chemicals in one drum too, leading to savings. It means consuming energy for only one drum too and Pajusco’s internal system allows reduced revolutions per minute, the company has said, leading to further savings.

Perhaps its space-saving argument seems counter-intuitive, but Pajusco’s point is that the increased capacity on offer with the Obelix will make it possible for tanners to save on the total number of drums in the line, thereby freeing up room on the tanning floor.
