A 60% increase in US hide exports
Tanners, traders and packers in the US exported a total of 24.2 million in the first eight months of this year. Shipments of 21.4 million wet-salted and 2.8 million wet blue hides made up the total.
Total revenues were $923.5 million, with wet-salted contributing $632.6 million and wet blue $290.9 million.
In terms of volume, this year’s figures represent an increase of 62.4% overall, with growth of 63% for wet-salted and 55% for wet blue year on year.
The increase in value was 64.7% overall, with growth of 69% for wet-salted and of 56% for wet blue.
China was by far the biggest importer of wet-salted hides, snapping up 13.6 million of them over the eight-month period, up by 45% year on year. However, Vietnam was the biggest buyer of wet blue, taking 750,000 hides, up by 92%.
