Weather and weak demand mean many Eid al-Adha hides will go to waste
The authorities in Turkey have estimated that celebrations across the country for the Eid al-Adha festival, which took place between July 20 and 23, have led to the slaughter of approximately 2.5 million sheep and goat, and of 900,000 head of cattle.
However, leather-sector commentators in Turkey have said they fear many of these hides and skins will fail to find their way to the country’s tanneries owing to weak demand for finished leather.
Another factor is that, with Eid al-Adha occurring at the hottest time of the year, the window of opportunity for salvaging the hides and skins is narrower than it has been in previous years, making it more likely that much of the material will go to waste.
