Change on the way for hide shipments to Mexico
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned traders in the US to prepare for changes in the requirements for shipping cattle hides to Mexico. The new requirements are still being finalised.
USDA has advised companies in the US involved in transporting hides south of the border to work closely with customs brokers and buyers in Mexico to make sure their shipments comply with the new requirements.
The Leather and Hide Council of America has said it remains closely involved in this process and will continue to share updates with member companies.
In 2020, more than 4.5 million wet-salted hides shipped from the US to tanners in Mexico, an increase of 66% compared to the year before. This figure represents almost 20% of all the wet-salted hides exported from the US last year.
