Leather suffers in Spain’s uneven recovery

Spain’s national statistics institute (INE) has published figures showing that some parts of the country’s manufacturing sector have already recovered enough to reach pre-pandemic levels, but it has warned of a very uneven recovery.

In releasing information relating to the level of industrial activity in May 2021, it showed that industries such as paper and chemicals were at about the same level as they were in May 2019. Other parts of the manufacturing sector, including electrical equipment, were substantially higher than they were before covid-19.

However, the figures also showed a number of areas of manufacturing that are still more than 25% lower than they were two years ago, with leather and footwear production at the bottom of the pile, down by 29% in May this year compared to May 2019.

Garment manufacture was down by 28.4% and automotive production by 26.6%.
