Figures for shipments of US hides in the first five months of the year show “considerable growth in value and volume for key industry exports compared to 2020”, the Leather and Hide Council of America has said.

From January to May this year, tanners, packer companies and traders exported more than 14.6 million hides, an increase compared to the same months last year of 62.7%.

Wet-salted hides contributed just under 13 million pieces to the total, while the figure for wet blue was a little over 1.6 million. These figures represent increases of 70% and 20% respectively.

In terms of value, hide exports brought in $523.3 million in revenues in the first five months of this year. This is an increase of 36.7% year on year.

Wet-salted hides contributed $356.1 million to the total, with $167.2 million coming from wet blue, up on the previous year’s figures by 48% and 17.5% respectively.

China was the lead destination for wet-salted and wet blue, taking around 58% of the total combined volume.
