Government funding revives Saint-Junien leather museum project

06/07/2021

The French government has breathed new life into a proposal to create a leather museum and showroom in the town of Saint-Junien in the Haute-Vienne region of the country.

Called the Cité du Cuir (Leather City) project, the idea was first discussed around 15 years ago. Now the government has said it will provide €600,000 available to help convert two former industrial buildings on the banks of the river Vienne into the new complex.

One building will house a museum, showing the region’s rich history in producing leather and finished leathergoods. A second building will host workshops and a showroom for products made by local leather artisans. It should open in 2024.

Luxury group Hermès has a factory in Saint-Junien and the region was, in the past, renowned for glove-making.
