Automotive leather maker ‘reinvents’ itself with new name

Leather manufacturer GST Seton AutoLeather has changed its company name to Pangea and established a new brand identity. Chief executive, Randy Johnson, described this move as a “reinvention of our company”.

GST AutoLeather filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2017. In April 2018, it secured a payment deal for its main creditors and, one month later, it formally exited Chapter 11 and Randy Johnson, formerly a senior figure at rival automotive leather provider Eagle Ottawa, joined as chief executive.

Pangea is the name geologists gave to a “supercontinent” that most of the earth’s land-mass combined to form around 300 million years ago.

On unveiling the new identity, Mr Johnson said the company had picked a name that “embodies connectedness” to reflect its global connections and the global team of artisans that make its leather. The company has operations in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.

“Our strategy is to continue building on that theme as we partner with our customers and suppliers to drive the future of mobility interiors,” Mr Johnson said, “creating immersive surface materials that are innovative and sustainable, while still retaining the inherent beauty and genuineness of leather. The craftsmanship behind making beautiful leather products continues to evolve and so has our organisation.”
