Leather chemicals bodies warn against bisphenol ‘utopia’

Italy’s national association of Italian leather chemicals manufacturers (UNPAC) and the Italian leather chemists’ association (AICC) have warned that their members need time to create effective products with a lower bisphenol content.

They said there have been increasing calls recently from brands and finished product manufacturers for the finished leather they use to have lower levels of residues of bisphenols A, F and S, but with no alteration to the quality of the leather.

“The thought of limiting the presence of these substances immediately is pure utopia,” the leather chemicals organisations said. “It takes time to create synthetic tannins with a lower bisphenol content.”
