IULTCS makes Heidemann Lecture announcement

13/05/2021

The International Union of Leather Technologists’ and Chemists’ Societies (IULTCS) has confirmed that Professor Anthony Covington, the emeritus professor of leather science at the University of Northampton, will deliver the Heidemann Lecture at the XXXVI IULTCS Congress. The Congress will take place in Addis Ababa from November 3-5.

The Heidemann Lecture is a keynote delivered at each IULTCS Congress in memory of Professor Dr Eckhardt Heidemann (1925-1999). Heidemann made significant practical contributions to the science of leather manufacture and he held a lifelong interest in the structure and properties of the collagen molecule.

Professor Covington is the author of more than 300 technical publications, receiving over 2600 citations in scientific literature. Together with co-author Dr Will Wise, he published a second edition of his book ‘Tanning Chemistry – The Science of Leather’ in 2019. He has a doctorate in physical organic chemistry and was awarded the world’s first Doctor of Science (DSc) degree in leather technology by the University of Northampton.

The technical committee for the XXXVI IULTCS Congress said its invitation to deliver the 2021 Hedemann Lecture was based on Professor Covington’s “unparalleled academic achievement in leather technology”.
