US packers, tanners and traders exported just under 8 million hides in the first quarter of 2021, an increase of more than 40% compared to the same quarter last year.

In total, hides shipped so far in 2021 have brought in revenues of $276.5 million, but this represents a decline of 2.3% compared to the figure for the first quarter of 2020.

Shipments of wet-salted hides increased by 53% in volume during the quarter, with more than 7 million pieces going to tanners overseas. This brought in revenues of $186 million, an increase of 8% year on year.

For wet blue, however, shipments fell by 13% in volume to just over 900,000 hides, and by 18% in value to just under $90.5 million.
